Brighton and Hove Albion News
Knight's worry over Adams' Gill interest
Dick Knight is in for a worrying few weeks with the news that Micky Adams is one of the favourites for the Gillingham manager's job. Gills boss Peter Taylor as expected has been named as the new manager at Leicester following Martin O'Neill's move to Celtic. And Gillingham chairman Paul Scally is believed to have lined up Adams if first choice Steve Coppell does not take the job at the Priestfield. That would be a huge blow for the Albion just when the club seem to be heading in the right direction. The last thing that Dick Knight wants is a state of flux enveloping Withdean but that is inevitable if Adams does go. The Albion manager is sure to want the job if it is offered to him as it would mean working in the First Division. And the fact that he started his career at the Priestfield stadium is sure to influence him too. Ironically, there was speculation over the future of Adams midway through the season with the Albion languishing in the bottom half of the table. But the 14 match unbeaten run at the end of the campaign and the signing of Paul Brooker last month has ignited a real sense of optimism amongst Brighton fans. If Adams is still at the Albion next season, the club are sure to be one of the favourites for automatic promotion next term. Former Fulham manager Adams nearly led the Albion to the play offs in his first full season with the club and the signs are that he is now aware of what the club need to succeed when the new season gets underway in August. He has already won promotion from the Third Division with one club, he led Fulham to the third division title in 1996-97, and Dick Knight knows that there is every chance that he will do the same with the Seagulls. Fortunately for Knight, Adams is not proven at Division One level and that will stand against him as far as Paul Scally is concerned because it will be Gills' first ever season in division one. The last thing that Scally will want is to begin such an important season with a manager as inexperienced at that level as Adams. Gillingham are bound to begin the season as one of the favourites for relegation as things stand so Scally will be wary of installing a manager who is as yet untested in Division One.

Barry on standby
Former Brighton youth player Gareth Barry could be thrust into the limelight tonight if England's problematic left hand side is exposed by the trickery of Portugal's Luis Figo. Steve McManaman has been asked to operate down the left flank in front of Phil Neville, but should the experiment fail, the sweet left foot of Barry may be called upon to nullify the threat and supply England with quality crosses.
